The sun may always shine on the picture-perfect islands of Maldives, but dark clouds are gathering on the horizon. Tourism is big business here, with over 1.7 million visitors per year flocking to enjoy the white sand beaches and turquoise lagoons. India has traditionally been Maldives’ biggest source of visitors. But a recent diplomatic spat has Indian celebrities and organizations calling for a boycott of Maldives travel.
The trouble started when three Maldivian officials mocked Indian Prime Minister Modi on social media. They poked fun at Modi’s beach vacation photos, calling him names like “clown” and “terrorist puppet.” Understandably outraged, India threatened to severely curtail visits to their southern neighbor.
Realizing they may have bitten the hand that feeds tourists to their islands, Maldives’ government swiftly suspended the loose-lipped officials. But for some Indians, the damage had already been done. Bollywood actors and cricket stars took to social media urging fans to vacation elsewhere, like the Lakshadweep islands where Modi visited. The hashtag #BoycottMaldives spread rapidly.
Nervous resort owners responded by massively slashing prices, offering discounts upwards of 50% to lure visitors. As boycotts often unfairly impact ordinary citizens just trying to make ends meet, I can hardly blame them. If you’ve ever dreamed about witnessing a Maldives sunset firsthand, now is the time to book it! Resorts are desperate to fill rooms, even offering free nights to attract tourists turned off by the political drama.
During my recent trip, I soaked up the silence on secluded beaches and marveled at sea turtles gliding through technicolor reefs. Tourism supports so many livelihoods here. I hope relations with India thaw soon, for the sake of locals who have always shared the best of Maldives’ natural splendor with grateful visitors. Paradise may be facing challenges, but its beauty endures.
